MINIONS DRESS CODE 2011 for Moby Dyke After a nearly unanimous consensus, we have finally decided on the official dress-code for the Minions of Key West Float “Moby Dyke” for 2011. BLACK SAILOR’S CAP In the movie “Moby Dick” nearly all of the crewmen wear a dark cap of some kind. Please feel free to select your own unique style of cap, but please keep it simple and within the “spirit” of the float. No “Beer Can” hats, “Dr. Seuss” hats, Baseball hats, etc. A nice vintage if even somewhat understated sailors cap would be perfect for this costume. PINK BANDANA – Necktie (Ben Franklin's - $2.69) Any pink bandana should do so long as it is PINK, Baby-Pink etc. with moderate design pattern or just plain pink. (Not hot pink or dark pink) PINK and WHITE STRIPED TANK TOP These can be purchase at Kmart for about $3.00. Be sure to get yours early before supplies run out. Regular pink and white striped tee-shirt or sleeveless tee-shirt should also do, as long as it is very close to looking like the tank top pictured here. *** UPDATE Some of the crew have expressed concerns about where to buy a pink striped “sailor’s” shirt. What I did was to buy a white tee-shirt from the Second Hand Sam’s for $1 dollar, and spray painted pink stripes on it. This more closely resembles the original sketch we had rendered back in April when we were deciding on the costumes for the parade. We wanted something that looked like what a whaling ship’s crew would wear (only pink), but not too “Piratey” or “French Mime”. Place strips of regular 1” masking tape horizontally across the front and back of the shirt, and spray paint with a light coat of (Rustoleum “Sweet Pea” satin) pink spray paint. "Poiphekt!" WHITE SAILOR’S PANT This is where you can get a bit creative. Any type of Capri or knee-high white sailor’s pants should do. Lace-up, button-up, ragged bottom, etc is acceptable. (Please no Khaki shorts or "Dockers"). Should be "White". Feel free to embellish with draw string’s, sash, belts, scabbards, knife sheaths, coin purse, rum flask, etc. PINK “ATHLETECH” BEACH SHOES These are also available at Kmart for about $9.00 Get them NOW while supplies last. (No tennis shoes please). PINK WHALE TATTOO Temporary tattoo Will be applied the day of the parade. Everyone will get one. This extra added touch will really help identify everyone as part of an awesome team! Upadate!!! We just got back from KMart and they have these PERFECT "Joe Boxer" sailor caps for $5.99 (we bought 2). And they still have plenty of "Athletech" beach shoes, $9.99 Be sure to get yours before they run out. You should also be able to find the pink Athletech beach shoes at Walgreens, Eckard and even some of the grocery stores carry them. Guys. If you can’t squeeze your big dogs into the pink beach shoes, try getting a pair of regular Men’s black shoes, and spray paint the webbing pink. I find that if you hit fabrics (any fabrics) with a coat of flat-white first, the pink (or any color for that matter) will stand out much better. Good luck, and welcome aboard Minions of Key West.
